Description:
The name Fu Dogs is actually a western term for these beautiful ceramic sculptures. In Chinese history and culture Imperial Guardian Lions, are a powerful feng shui symbol for protection of the home. Fu Dogs were traditionally placed facing Imperial palaces, temples, and government offices. They were also a traditional feng shui symbol of household wealth and social status and were put facing wealthy homes. They are usually displayed in pairs - a male and a female. So the story goes that travelers brought tales of lions as a Buddhist protector of Dharma, and statues of lions were modelled in feng shui following the forgeig travelers' descriptions, and after the native dogs.
The colour blue gained special significance in the history of Chinese ceramics during the Tang dynasty. The distinctive colour in blue-glazed pottery and porcelain comes from cobalt ores imported from Persia.
