Description
Louise Hill: I have a huge love for all things vintage Hong Kong, especially it’s iconic neon signs, I have had great fun hand finishing this piece in metallic foil to light up the signs and bring them to life!
Having lived for many years in this vibrant beautiful city, I fell in love with it’s addictive energy and grit, intertwined with an immense sense of culture and heritage.
From world famous art galleries, to it’s edgy funky street cafes and bars, amazingly talented street artists, Hong Kong is alive with creativity!
The neon signs are a huge cultural icon of this colourful city and I wanted to create a fun, vibrant design to celebrate it. This piece features many photos of some of my favourite signs alongside some iconic HK letterboxes that also feature the same aesthetic of metallic vintage colours and textures. On the left of the design is an old biscuit tin I photographed which features Chang’e (嫦娥) who is the Chinese goddess of the moon, best known for stealing an elixir of immortality from her husband, Hou Yi. Her story is celebrated as part of the annual Mid-Autumn Festival.
All the images are my own and shot in various locations on my walking adventures around Hong Kong.
